Reconstituted Family Groups

Skinner Slave Families

This list of the larger Skinner slave families has been compiled from the Skinner slave lists of 1846, 1850 and 1860; the Joseph Blount Skinner estate division of slaves in 1852; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Edenton, N.C., baptismal records, and North Carolina census, marriage and death records. The list is a work in progress, contains many questions, and should be considered as more suggestive than definitive. It is not complete nor does it contain all of the names from the Skinner slave records. It is an attempt to present a clearer picture, by family surname, of the families mentioned in the 1852 estate inventory; however, because there are no lists before 1846, some children born before 1838 may be missing from their families of origin.
