Chicago Institute of Art. At the time that Tristrim Skinner wrote this 1848 Valentine poem, American Valentine cards were not yet commercially distributed in the United States. Expensive, elaborate cut-lace cards were imported from England throughout the 1840s until Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, formed the New England Valentine Company and imported English paper lace and floral designs. She created a dozen sample cards in 1849 and placed \u00a0her first advertisement in 1850.<\/p><\/div>\n ~~~<\/p>\n But he who would praise excellence,<\/em><\/p>\n That\u2019s true, and free from all pretence;<\/em><\/p>\n Must raise his thoughts afar above,<\/em><\/p>\n All else on earth except true love.<\/em><\/p>\n ~~~<\/p>\n And I with wings unused to soar;<\/em><\/p>\n To realms so far above the sky<\/em><\/p>\n Could offer but a tribute poor,<\/em><\/p>\n To her whose praise I place so high<\/em>,<\/p>\n ~~~<\/p>\n To do thee justice well I see,<\/em><\/p>\n Would need a favoured Poet\u2019s pen;<\/em><\/p>\n And I, not brave, but rash, would be,<\/em><\/p>\n To make the attempt: what can I then:<\/em><\/p>\n ~~~<\/p>\n I needs must leave the tack undone,<\/em><\/p>\n Until some far more favored son,<\/em><\/p>\n Of song, shall raise in after days<\/em><\/p>\n Aided by Jove to sing thy praise.<\/em><\/p>\n ~~~<\/p>\n “Maiden Fair of High Degree,” 1845-1850, by Joseph Mansell, English.
